Club World Cup: No place for Jack Grealish in 27-man Man City squad

English forward Jack Grealish has not been included in Manchester City’s squad for the Club World Cup. Grealish was a notable omission as City boss Pep Guardiola named a 27-man squad for the tournament, which kicks off in Miami on Saturday.

Signed for British record from Aston Villa for 100 million pounds ($139 million then) in 2021, Grealish helped City win three Premier League titles, the Champions League, and other trophies.

Grealish’s time at City looks all but over

But he has fallen down the pecking order, becoming an increasingly peripheral figure, making only seven league starts last season.

While Guardiola recently backed Grealish in a press conference, his decision to omit the Englishman from the Club World Cup squad indicates his future at the club as City boss embarks on a squad rebuild following the team’s first trophyless season in eight years.

New faces picked in the squad

Guardiola has included the four new players signed in the mini transfer window, with Rayan Cherki, Tijjani Reijnders, Rayan Ait-Nouri and Marcus Bettinelli all part of the 27-man squad.

In January, City brought in Omar Marmoush, Abdukodir Khusanov and Vitor Reis to the Etihad Stadium after City’s dominance in English football was ended by Liverpool last season.

Grealish likely to follow KDB, Walker out of the club

If Grealish departs, he is likely to follow Kevin De Bruyne, who is leaving at the end of his contract this month, out of the club. English right-back Kyle Walker is also likely to leave the club after a loan move to AC Milan in January. Neither De Bruyne nor Walker was named in the squad for the 32-team tournament.

City open their Club World Cup campaign against Wydad Casablanca next Wednesday in Philadelphia. The other teams in the group are Italian giants Juventus and Abu Dhabi’s Al Ain.
