IPL 2025 then, T20 Mumbai now: Shreyas Iyer endures second final heartbreak in 10 days

New Delhi: Shreyas Iyer endured another heartbreak as his SoBo Mumbai Falcons fell short against Mumbai South Central Maratha Royals in the final of the T20 Mumbai League 2025 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Thursday. This marked back-to-back defeats for Iyer as captain of a T20 side in a final, coming within 10 days of Punjab Kings’ (PBKS) loss to Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the title clash of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 in Ahmedabad on Tuesday, June 3.

In the regional T20 league’s final clash, Iyer himself scored just 12 off 17 balls as Falcons made 157/4 in 20 overs after being put in to bat. The Maratha Royals, led by Siddhesh Lad, achieved the target with four balls to spare and five wickets still in hand to lift the Mumbai T20 title in its third edition. Iyer ended the tournament with just 62 runs in five innings, with a best score of 25.

“Don’t want to pinpoint any incident – overall, the boys were brilliant with their effort. We just lost one game en route to the final. Just a one-off game, where you can’t single out anyone. It’s basically backstabbing (if criticising someone), and I don’t enjoy that,” Iyer said after the final.

“It’s pretty common to feel dejected after a final loss. It must hurt (the players). But when they come back next year, they’ll have that extra motivation and confidence. They should be proud of their effort,” Iyer added.

Iyer’s leadership success continues…

It seems Shreyas Iyer has made a habit of getting to tournament finals, as he has gone through an excellent and successful time as captain. Before guiding his teams to the IPL 2025 final and the Mumbai T20 League final, he led Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to their first IPL title in a decade in 2024. He even propelled Mumbai to victory in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.

The 30-year-old Team India batter was part of Mumbai’s victorious campaigns in both the Ranji Trophy 2023-24 and the Irani Cup that followed. To add another feather in his cap, he played a pivotal role in India’s successful run to the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 title, in March this year.

Mumbai South Central Maratha Royals defeated Shreyas Iyer’s SoBo Mumbai Falcons by five wickets in the T20 Mumbai 2025 final at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium on Thursday. This was Iyer’s second heartbreak in a T20 league final within 10 days.  Cricket Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
