Gautam Gambhir makes big demand from BCCI ahead of appointment as India’s next head coach

New Delhi: Former India batter Gautam Gambhir is all set to replace Rahul Dravid as the new head coach of the Indian cricket team. His appointment is reportedly imminent after the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) mentor was interviewed by BCCI’s Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) virtually on Tuesday, June 18. The interview was a mere formality as Gambhir is understood to be the only contender shortlisted for the top job.

CAC chairman Ashok Malhotra and his colleagues Jatin Paranjpe and Sulakshana Naik, who are the other two members of the committee interviewed Gambhir on a Zoom call meeting. While the details of the interaction are not known yet, the CAC is expected to soon submit their feedback before Gambhir’s appointment if formalised.

Gautam Gambhir’s demand from BCCI:

As per a report in news agency IANS, Gambhir has put forth a big demand from BCCI before taking over as the new head coach of the Indian men’s cricket team. Gambhir has asked for separate teams in red-ball and white-ball cricket for India going forward. He has also asked for full control of the team during his tenure and BCCI has accepted all his demands.

BCCI had invited applications for the Team India head coach position in May this year and the deadline for the application was May 27. Dravid’s tenure as the India head coach is set to end after the conclusion of the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024. The former India batter had the option to reapply and seek an extension but he decided against it.

A number of big names were linked with the top post, including the likes of Stephen Fleming, Justin Langer and Ricky Ponting among others. However, none of the foreigners showcased an interest in the position owing to the strict demands of travelling round the year with only two months of a break. Most of them were happy with their respective coaching roles in T20 leagues around the world which gives them enough time to spend with family.

Gambhir emerged as one of the frontrunners for the India head coach post after helping KKR lift the IPL 2024 title as a mentor. The former India batter returned to KKR after the end of his two-year stint with Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and played a key role in helping them bring an end to a decade-long title drought.
