New Delhi: Kidney cancer constitutes about 2-3% of all cancers in our country, with around 15,000 new cases diagnosed annually. The incidence is notably higher in men than in women, with a male-to-female ratio of approximately 2:1. India faces a complex situation with kidney cancer. While cases might be rising due to improved detection and lifestyle factors, there’s also a trend towards diagnosing the disease at earlier stages. This allows for minimally invasive surgeries and targeted therapies leading to potentially better outcomes.
What are the causes of kidney cancer?
Talking about the importance of the condition and the many complications associated with it, Dr. Shakir Tabrez – Additional Director- Department of Urology, Uro- Oncology, Andrology, Kidney Transplant and Robotic Surgery, Fortis Cunningham Road, shared some insights.
“The majority of kidney tumours which are diagnosed and treated effectively are detected early on health checkups.Hence the emphasis on annual health checkups, where on a regular ultrasound scan, even a small renal tumour can be picked up early. Once detected – through the technologically advanced marvel of robotic surgery – nephron sparing surgery – where just the tumour is removed leaving behind the rest of the functioning normal kidney can be performed allowing an effective cure while maintaining excellent quality of life,” said Dr Tabrez.
Dr. Raghunath S.K, Senior Consultant and Director of Uro-oncology and Robotic Surgery, HCG Cancer Centre, KR Road, Bangalore, also answered other FAQs about the disease – its causes, risk factors, symptoms and prevention tips.
Risk factors and symptoms of kidney cancer
Kidney cancer risk is increased by factors such as smoking, obesity, hypertension, and a family history of the disease. Additionally, chronic kidney disease and exposure to certain chemicals are significant risk factors. Early-stage kidney cancer often presents no symptoms, making regular health check-ups crucial. Be vigilant for warning signs like blood in urine, persistent back or flank pain, unexplained weight loss, and fatigue.
Prevention of kidney cancer
Prevention plays a key role in combating kidney cancer. Maintaining a healthy weight through a balanced diet and regular exercise is essential. Avoiding smoking and limiting alcohol consumption can significantly reduce the risk. Managing underlying health conditions like hypertension and diabetes effectively is also critical for kidney health.
Treatment of kidney cancer
The treatment landscape for kidney cancer has significantly evolved. Surgical techniques like partial Nephrectomy can cure early and small kidney tumour by preserving the kidney to remove only the tumour. Targeted therapies, and immunotherapy have improved survival rates and quality of life for patients. Access to timely and appropriate medical care is vital for effective treatment outcomes.
