Six-hitting fest: Record tumbles as T20 World Cup 2024 brings most maximums in tournament history

New Delhi: As recently said by Sir Curtley Ambrose cricket has become a batter’s game over the years, the fact was weighed in all the more as the T20 World Cup 2024 saw the record getting shattered for the highest number of sixes in a single edition in the tournament’s history. After the conclusion of the West Indies vs USA Super Eight clash, the T20 showpiece unlocked a new milestone, registering a new feat of the most number of maximums.

While the games played so far have rarely seen a 200+ score, the batters have taken centerstage showcasing their batting prowess and taking the bowlers to the cleaners. In what can be said as a huge landmark, the T20 World Cup 2024 is now 412 sixes strong. It is for this number of times that the ball has been sent out of the park, either in the stands or right in the streets after 20 days of regular games.

The previous record was made in the 2021 edition of the showpiece event when the batters accumulated 405 sixes in the UAE. Before the start of the WI vs USA clash, the sixes tally for the ongoing edition stood at 398 and during the game, 14 sixes were hit – including three from USA and 11 from West Indies. Shai Hope headlined the game with his ferocious and unbeaten 82-run knock that brought eight towering sixes followed by three from Nicholas Pooran.

Pooran overtakes Gayle for most sixes

Pooran is the leading six-hitter in the ongoing event, having 17 to his credit now, and has surpassed legendary Chris Gayle who held the record of 16 sixes (2012) in a T20 World Cup edition.

Most sixes in a T20 World Cup edition

17 – Nicholas Pooran (2024)
16 – Chris Gayle (2012)
15 – Marlon Samuels (2012)
15 – Shane Watson (2012)

The T20 World Cup 2024 currently goes through the Super Eight stage where the eight sides are vying for the coveted T20 trophy. Australia and India have bagged a win each from Group 1 while South Africa, West Indies, and England have two and a single win each respectively from Group 2. It all started with 20 teams divided into four groups of five each and the top two teams from each of the groups advanced into the Super Eights.

As the T20 World Cup 2024 Super 8 clash between hosts West Indies and USA concluded, the tournament has reached a new height surpassing the previous record of highest number of sixes in a single edition.  Cricket Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
