India
The monsoon in India begins with pre-monsoon showers in May and June and lasts from June to September. Most parts of western and central India receive more than 90 per cent of their total annual precipitation during this period, while southern and northwestern India gets 50-75 per cent of their total annual rainfall. Overall, monthly totals average 200-300 mm over the country, with the heart of the monsoon season being July-August.
Costa Rica
Costa Rica has two seasons: the dry and rainy seasons, also called the green seasons. The rainy season runs from mid-May through November. The people in this country typically refer to these wet months as “winter.” The beginning of the rainy season is a welcome break from the dry season. The forests turn green, and the wildlife is more active. Rain trickles in, but it typically takes up most of the afternoons.
Nicaragua
Monsoon season officially begins in Nicaragua at the end of May, with the heaviest rain in September and October. The country can experience rain every day. On the East Coast, rains last longer into the year, and the region experiences flooding during the rainy season.
Bangladesh
Bangladesh’s rainy season coincides with the summer monsoon, which occurs from June through mid-October. Rainfall during this season accounts for 75–80 per cent of the country’s annual rainfall. With heavy rain, the country experiences several floods that cause extensive damage to crops, life, property, and livestock.
Pakistan
Pakistan lies in a temperate zone, and four seasons are recognised here: winter, summer, spring, summer, the rainy season, and the retreating monsoons. Monsoons bring upwards of 200 mm a month from July to September.
Sri Lanka
The main Yala (southwest) monsoon brings rain to the west and southwest coasts and the hill country from April or May to September. The wettest here is from April to June, and the less severe Maha (northeast) monsoon hits the east coast from November to March. If you plan a trip to Sri Lanka during the monsoon season, pack an umbrella and a raincoat, and be prepared for breathtaking views of the lush green landscapes.
