While the speed of Vande Bharat Express and Gatimaan Express will be slowed down to 130 km from 160 kmph, the Shatabdi Express will now run at 130 km, compared to 150 kmph earlier. This speed reduction is likely to increase the travel time by 25-30 minutes on the specified routes.

This change is also likely to affect the schedule of 8-10 other trains, according to railways officials. To be sure, the Vande Bharat Express is running at near 130 kmph speeds on most routes across India, except for a few stretches of the Delhi-Kanpur sector, the officials added.

Will slowing down trains improve safety?

Shubhranshu, former Principal Chief Mechanical Engineer at the Integral Coach Factory said the move to cut train speeds in the aftermath of the Kanchanjunga Express was knee-jerk. He said that the collision was not owing to high speed, since the goods train that collided with the Kanchanjunga Express was running at a speed of 45 kmph, the Hindu reported. Shubhranshu was instrumental in the design and development of the Vande Bharat Express.
