New Delhi: Acting on the IT-sector union NITES’ complaint on mass layoffs by Infosys at Mysuru campus, the Centre directed the Karnataka government to take measures to resolve the issue. Recently, it was reported that IT major Infosys laid off over 300 freshers, citing their failure to clear internal assessments despite multiple attempts.
However, Nascent Information Technology Employees Senate (NITES) has claimed nearly 700 trainees were asked to leave by Infosys. The union appealed to the Union Ministry of Labour and Employment, demanding immediate intervention and strict action against the IT major.
NITES’ complaint alleged Infosys forcibly terminated, citing incompetence of the onboarded campus recruits “who had already suffered a delay of two years in their joining after being issued offer letters.”
Karnataka Labour Department official visited Infosys campus in Mysuru & Bengaluru and collected relevant information and documents. The investigation is underway.
What Infosys said on layoffs
Meanwhile, the Bengaluru-headquartered IT services company has termed the layoffs as a “mutual separation” and dismissed flouting any rules. However, the fired trainees are demanding reinstatement and legal action against the IT company for alleged violations of labour laws.
In response to an email query from PTI, the company said, “At Infosys, we have a rigorous hiring process where all freshers, after undergoing extensive foundational training at our Mysuru campus, are expected to clear internal assessments.” All freshers get three attempts to clear the assessment, failing which they will not be able to continue with the organisation, the company said, asserting that this clause “is also mentioned in their contract”.
MoneyControl quoted a fired female trainee saying that she was not allowed to stay overnight at the Mysuru campus as Infosys officials asked her to leave the campus by 6 pm as she was no longer part of the company.
The Centre asked the Karnataka government to take action on Infosys after the IT services giant admitted to laying off over 300 freshers at the Infosys Mysuru campus for months. Biz News Business News – Personal Finance News, Share Market News, BSE/NSE News, Stock Exchange News Today
