Telangana: Dalit boy tied up and beaten for plucking pomegranate

Hyderabad: A teenage Dalit boy was tied up and beaten for plucking a pomegranate from a teacher’s house in Keesaram area on the outskirts of Hyderabad, reports said.

The incident occurred on June 22 in Keesaram village, Shabad mandal. The boy, who belonged to the SC community, reportedly scaled the wall of the retired school teacher’s house to pluck a pomegranate from a tree, police said.

The teacher, who spotted the boy, caught him and tied him upside down with a rope and beat him up, the police added. A picture of the boy lying on the ground went viral and many netizens questioned the brutality inflicted on the boy.

Based on a complaint registered by the boy’s parents, the police registered cases under IPC sections 342 (wrongful confinement), 324 (causing hurt), relevant sections of Juvenile Justice Act and SC/ST Prevention of Atrocities Act against the teacher and his son. Investigation is underway.
