Virat Kohli: Has the showman kept the best for the last or will another flop show spoil our mood?

Virat Kohli: Has the showman kept the best for the last or will another flop show spoil our mood?

New Delhi: The drastic dip in form of superstar Virat Kohli has eventually become bigger than the T20 World Cup 2024. Amongst plenty of silver linings for the Men in Blue in this showpiece event, perhaps this is the only thing that has irked the Indian cricket and all the fans across the nation.

While the superstar hasn’t been able to fire at all as per his stature, his inconsistency and haplessness has even raised the question whether his selection for the big-ticket event was justified or not. Kohli’s presence was considered crucial for the World Cup keeping in mind the plethora of oversees experience and quality but it may can be said that he has let India down.

75 runs in 7 matches

Kohli, who emerged as the top run-getter at the 50-over World Cup in India in 2023 and Indian Premier League, failed to showcase his world-class batting prowess which he’s best known for. In all the seven matches India has played so far in the lead up to the summit clash, he has just amassed 75 runs with the best score of 37 against Bangladesh.

After looking at his performance at the ODI World Cup 2023 and IPL 2024 and comparing it with the ongoing marquee event in the US and West Indies, we may not shirk from calling him a champion of the home grounds. Whether it’s the oversees conditions, the dramatic pitches, his over confidence or under confidence or just a bad phase, Kohli has failed to play the role of a torchbearer. But what history has to say about this class batter cannot be written off at any cost. Be it an oversees pitch or any home ground, there is reason why he’s regarded as one of the best in the business.

Is the best yet to come?

With many cricket pundits and his dearest mate and skipper Rohit Sharma backing Kohli to fire in the final showdown against South Africa, we as viewers are also waiting for that one knock that will shut the mouths of the critics. The star batter has showcased few glimpses of his class in few innings but has unfortunately failed to convert those into valuable ones.

With the summit clash just a day away, Kohli and the entire Indian team would want the star batter to deliver and contribute in India’s effort of breaking the 11-year-old jinx of not winning a big ICC crown. The batter too would be eager to play his natural game which has contributed in his being.

While Rohit also admits that Kohli’s bad form is not a problem and he will get back in his shoes, former India legend Sourav Ganguly has backed him to fire in the summit clash. Ganguly has said that Kohli is an institution and not just a mere player and few bad games do not mean that he should be written off for the final showdown.

Kohli might possibly call it quits from the shortest format of the game after the culmination of the marquee event and we might not see Kohli in the next edition of the World Cup but the Indian cricket and all the fans will surely remain indebted towards his services irrespective of whether he delivers or not in the T20 World Cup 2024 final.
