‘Time to say goodbye’: Kevin De Bruyne confirms Manchester City exit at end of season

New Delhi: Manchester City midfielder Kevin De Bruyne has confirmed that he will depart Manchester City when his contract runs out at the end of the current season. The announcement deals a major setback to Pep Guardiola’s squad as the Belgian playmaker has been instrumental in the club’s dominance over the years.

De Bruyne arrived in 2015 and has played a crucial role in securing six Premier League titles and a historic Champions League triumph. He won 16 trophies with the club and was also a key figure in City’s treble-winning campaign during the 2022-23 season.

The Belgian midfielder took to X (formerly Twitter) to confirm the move in an emotional post on Friday. He wrote, “Dear Manchester, Seeing this, you probably realise where this is heading. So, I’ll get straight to it and let you all know that these will be my final months as a Manchester City player. Nothing about this is easy to write, but as football players, we all know this day eventually comes. That day is here – and you deserve to hear it from me first.”

De Bruyne added, “This city. This club. These people… gave me EVERYTHING. I had no choice but to give EVERYTHING back! And guess what — we won EVERYTHING.”

De Bruyne final season at Etihad

The 33-year-old has made 413 appearances in all competitions and has registered 106 goals. So far this season, he has started in just 19 matches. Man City are currently fifth in the Premier League standings and trailing 22 points behind the table-toppers. The reigning champions are one point behind Chelsea and are set to face Manchester United next on coming Sunday.

De Bruyne has won the PFA Players’ Player of the Year award twice, in 2019/20 and 2020/21, which underlines the influence he holds on English football’s most dominant side of the last decade. As he wrote, “Every story comes to an end, but this has definitely been the best chapter.”

Kevin De Bruyne announced he will leave Man City at the end of the season ending his 10 year spell. The 33-year-old has won 16 trophies, including six Premier League titles and the 2023 Champions League.  Football Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
