Explained: What is the cut-off time for a full game if rain plays spoilsport in T20 WC 2024 final?

New Delhi: India will be aiming to end their 11-year-long ICC trophy drought when they lock horns with South Africa in the all-important final of the T20 World Cup 2024 on Saturday, June 29. Both teams are unbeaten in the tournament so far and are expected to produce a cracker of a final. The summit clash will be played at the Kennington Oval in Bridgetown, Barbados.

India defeated England in a one-sided contest in the second semi-final to reach their first T20 World Cup final since 2014 while South Africa got the better of a spirited Afghanistan in the first semi-final to qualify for their maiden World Cup final. Both teams have history on the line as they go up against each other in the final.

While the fans are geared up for an exciting contest between the two best teams of the tournament, there is a strong chance of rain playing spoilsport in the final. As per Accuweather, there is around a 51% chance of rain at 10 AM local time (7:30 PM IST). The weather prediction doesn’t look promising as the day progresses with still a 50% chance till 2 PM local time (11:30 PM IST).

What is the cut-off time for a full 40-over game in the final?

As per the ICC rules, there will be no deductions of overs in the final for a maximum of 60 minutes from the start of the match if rain delays the proceedings. However, overs will start getting reduced after one hour of additional time which means 9 PM IST will be the cut-off time for a full 40-over match in the T20 World Cup 2024 final.

Both teams will have to play a minimum of ten overs in their respective innings for the result to be determined and the final cannot be a 5-over-a-side match. The cut-off time for a 10-over match is 11:10 PM IST. If the match fails to get underway by 11: 10 PM, the final will be called off and will head into the reserve day.

Unlike India’s semi-final against England, there is a reserve day in place for the summit clash and the game will be completed on Sunday, June 30 if it fails to take place on Saturday.
