New Delhi: India defeated South Africa by 7 runs and lifted the T20 World Cup 2024 title at the Kensington Oval in Barbados. Chasing the target of 177 runs, the match was in South Africa’s hand after Klaasen smashed 24 runs in the 15th over but Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya and Arshdeep Singh pulled things back in India’s favour as The Men in Blue ended their 11-year ICC trophy drought.
Bumrah provided India their first breakthrough when he dismissed Reeza Hendricks in the second over of the run-chase. Arshdeep Singh dismissed Aiden Markram in the ninth over. Quinton de Kock and Tristan Stubbs stitched a 58-run partnership and Klaasen also stitched a crucial partnership with David Miller. But Aiden Markram and Co failed to chase down the target and lost the match by 7 runs.
Earlier, India scored 176 runs in 20 overs after winning the toss and opting to bat. Virat Kohli smashed 76 runs off 59 balls, his outstanding knock was laced with six boundaries and two maximums. Axar Patel also scored 47 runs off 31 balls, he smashed four maximums and one boundary in his brilliant knock.
