New Delhi: When Heinrich Klassen smashed Axar Patel for 24 runs in the 15th over, South Africa could picture themselves lifting their maiden World Cup title. With 30 runs needed in as many deliveries and six wickets in hand, the historic title seemed inevitable. But what looked like a straightforward march towards victory, turned out to be a road full of unbreakable barriers.

The Indian pace battery turned the tide in the space of few deliveries and the whole mood inside the South African camp changed in a matter of minutes. With crucial wickets in quick succession, the balance of the match titled towards India, who held their nerve to end the long-standing World Cup drought.

For South Africa, it was another case of so near yet so far. After seven World Cup semi-final heartbreaks, the Proteas suffered a final heartache.

The Blue brigade inside the Kensington Oval erupted in joy while the Protea fans were left heartbroken after the agonising loss.
