The dampness fosters the growth of viruses and fungi, leading to conjunctivitis, commonly known as “pink eye.”
Symptoms of Conjunctivitis
Symptoms include redness, itching, grittiness, and excessive tearing with discharge. Pollen, dust, and other airborne particles carried by the monsoon winds can further aggravate eye irritation, causing discomfort even to non-allergic individuals.
Eye Care Tips During Monsoon:
Maintaining eye health during the monsoon can be achieved by following a few simple yet effective measures:
• Hand Hygiene: Avoid touching your eyes with unwashed hands, as germs and bacteria can easily infect them. Always wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water before touching your eyes or face.
• Contact Lens Hygiene: If you wear contact lenses, ensure your hands are clean before handling them. Consider using daily disposable lenses prescribed by your eye specialist for added hygiene and comfort.
• Environmental Cleanliness: Regularly clean your living space to minimize mould and dust accumulation, which can exacerbate allergies and eye irritation.
• Eye Protection: Wear sunglasses to protect your eyes from wind, rain, and airborne pollutants during the monsoon season.
• Stay Dry: Avoid visiting waterlogged areas, as they can be breeding grounds for various bacteria and viruses that may cause eye infections.
• Avoid Swimming Pools: Public swimming pools may harbour bacteria and fungi that thrive in warm, moist conditions. It’s advisable to refrain from using them during the rainy season to prevent potential infections.
• Avoid OTC Eye Drops: Do not use medicated eye drops without a doctor’s prescription. Improper use of eye drops can worsen symptoms or cause adverse effects.
• Makeup Hygiene: Clean and sanitise your makeup applicators regularly to prevent bacterial buildup that can lead to eye infections.
