Villupuram: Voting for the by-election in the Vikravandi assembly constituency has started and is going on briskly.12.94% percentage of votes have been recorded as of 9 am in the Vikravandi assembly bypoll on Wednesday. Voting in the constituency began at 7 am and will conclude at 6 pm.
Vikravandi DMK MLA Pugazhendhi passed away on April 6 due to ill health. After this the constituency was declared vacant and the by-election date was announced.
While the main opposition AIADMK had boycotted the by-elections, there are a total of 29 candidates in the field, including Anniyur Siva from the ruling party DMK, C. Anbumani from PMK who is a member of the National Democratic Alliance, and Abhinaya from Nam Tamilar Party.
For the last 15 days, DMK, PMK, and Nam Tamil parties have been engaged in a whirlwind campaign. Voting will be held today from 7 am to 6 pm as the campaign ended the day before yesterday. Out of 276 polling stations, 3 were identifed as highly critical and 42 were identified as critical.
Meanwhile, all the necessary facilities have been made in the polling stations for the public to cast their votes without any difficulties. Wheelchair ramps are also provided at the polling stations, especially for disabled voters and for the convenience of senior citizens.
2,651 constables, including 220 central constables, will be deployed for security to ensure that the public can vote without fear. The votes cast today will be counted on July 13.
