Hyderabad: Doctors at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Bibinagar in Telangana performed a rare surgery on a three month-old baby boy to remove a 15 cm long human tail from the lumbosacral region.
AIIMS head of Paediatric Department, Dr Shashank Panda, said that human tails are very rare and only 40 such cases have been seen and operated on in the world. In recent times, one such case was seen in China and it took the doctors a year to remove it. We, however, performed the surgery and removed the tail, Dr Panda said.
After removing it, we reconstructed the child’s spinal canal using an advanced procedure. It was a complicated process and there was a chance for neurological problems. After the surgery, the baby had no neurological deficit and good wound cosmesis at six months post surgery follow up. The postoperative recovery was uneventful, he further stated.
Dr Panda noted that the three-month old baby’s identity must not be revealed as per medical ethics and that the baby was from a district in Telangana. The surgery, which was performed in January 2024, took two-and-a-half hours for a three-member team of doctors.
The human tail is a rare congenital malformation which protrudes from midline skin-covered lumbosacral region.
