Can Dengue fever affect the brain? Neurologist weighs in

New Delhi: Dengue cases are on the rise in states including Karnataka, Kerala, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Delhi and Maharashtra. With the onset of monsoon, vector-borne diseases also increase, while mosquito-borne viral diseases have a significant impact on the brain that is often overlooked, as per some reports.

A recent report has revealed the neurological manifestations of dengue, neurological manifestations of dengue are very rare but the problems include, encephalitis, meningitis, and myelitis. Dengue is a waterborne disease that occurs after getting bitten by infectious mosquitoes called Aedes aegypti mosquito. These mosquitoes can breed in stagnant water in places like flower pots, tyres, open containers, buckets, and puddles. In conversation with News9, Dr Mansi Shah Consultant Neurologist, Parkinson’s Disease and Movement Disorders Specialist Wockhardt Hospitals Mira Road said, “Dengue can significantly impact your brain resulting in conditions like encephalitis, a condition that leads to inflammation in the brain. It all starts with the dengue virus entering your body through the bite of an infected mosquito.”

How Dengue virus affect the brain?

According to Dr Shah, “The virus further gets dissolved in your bloodstream and reaches various organs and most importantly the brain. It further passes through the blood-brain barrier allowing the virus to enter your brain. This virus can negatively impact your brain cells resulting in problems like cerebral dysfunction, coma or even death. One can experience symptoms like headache, confusion, focal neurological deficits and unconsciousness. Immediately consult your doctor if you start to experience these symptoms for timely intervention.”

Preventive Tips for Dengue

With a detailed treatment plan, one can effectively combat this impact resulting in reduced inflammation. To prevent the risk of dengue one should take necessary precautions.

Apply a generous layer of mosquito repellent on your clothes to safeguard yourself from getting bitten by Aedes mosquitoes.
Keep your surrounding areas clean and frequently change the water in containers or flower pots as it creates a perfect environment for Aedes mosquitoes to breed.
Make sure to keep your doors and windows closed especially after sunset to restrict Aedes mosquitoes from entering your house.
