New Delhi: England batter Joe Root equalled Ian Bell for a big record achieved at the iconic Lord’s stadium on Thursday. On the second day of the first Test match between England and West Indies, Root scored a sensational knock of 68, creating a record for the second-highest number of fifty-plus scores by a batter at the Lord’s stadium.
This is now the joint-second-most number by a batter at this venue as Root equalled Ian Bell (12) in this regard. Alastair Cook (16) owns more fifty-plus scores here. The veteran batter slammed his 12th fifty-plus score at Lord’s.
In the match, Root played a fine knock off 114 deliveries which was studded with seven boundaries. Root, who was unbeaten on an overnight score of 15, got to his half-century in the first session on Day 2.
Notably, he shared a 91-run stand for the 4th wicket alongside fellow overnight batter Harry Brook. He got to his fifty off 83 balls.
Motie ends Root’s innings
In the 67th over of England’s innings, Root was dismissed by Gudakesh Motie. The spinner went wide of the crease and fired in a full delivery which sort of held its line. The seasoned batter attempted to drive the ball but missed it to get castled. Root has a fantastic record at the Lord’s stadium as he has scored 1776 runs in 21 Test matches at the iconic venue. He has an average of 50.74 at the venue with five centuries and seven fifties to his name.

Meanwhile, the dismissal of Root did not impact the England side much as Zak Crawley, Harry Brook, Ollie Pope and Jamie Smith too played valuable knocks to help the hosts build a comprehensive lead over the visitors.
