New Delhi: Double-Olympic medalist PV Sindhu has been placed in Group M of the women’s singles category as the Badminton World Federation (BWF) announced the group stage draws of four categories on Friday (July 12) in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

World No.13 Sindhu, who will appear in her third Olympics event, will play against Estonia’s Kristin Kuuba (World No.75) and Maldives’ Fathimath Nabaaha Abdul Razzaq (World No.111) in Group M. The 29-year-old will be India’s lone representation in the women’s singles event.

In the men’s singles event, Worlds and Asian Games bronze medalist HS Prannoy is placed in Group K along with Vietnam’s Le Duc Phat (World No.70) and Germany’s Fabian Roth (World No.82).

Meanwhile, Commonwealth Games champion Lakshya Sen will face a stiff test against Indonesia’s World No.3 Jonathan Cristie in Group L. World No.41 Kevin Cordon of Guatemala and World No.52 Julien Carragi of Belgium are also part of this group.

The World No.19 experienced-young duo of Ashwini Ponnappa and Tanisha Crasto are clubbed in Group C along with Japan (World No.4 Nami Matsuyama and Chiharu Shida), South Korea (World No.7 Kim So Yeong and Kong Hee Yong) and Australia (World No.27 Setyana Mapasa and Angela Yu).

Men’s doubles draws postponed

The BWF has postponed to host the draws of men’s doubles category because of a pending hearing before the Court of Arbitration of Sport.

“Following a Court of Arbitration of Sport (CAS) hearing, BWF will conduct the men’s doubles draw on another date yet to be determined,” the BWF issued a statement just ahead of the draw.

This means India’s top-ranked pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty will have to wait for their draws for a while. The duo is deemed to be India’s biggest medal hope in the upcoming Paris Olympics given their consistency in BWF tournaments, and particularly after they won gold at the Asian Games in Hangzhou last year.
