‘Solid display’: BCCI secy Jay Shah praises Indian team after 1st T20I win vs SA

New Delhi: India’s comprehensive victory over South Africa in the first T20I was lauded by the Board of Control for Cricket India’s secretary Jay Shah.

India thumped SA by 61 runs in Durban riding on Sanju Samson’s second straight T20I century (107 runs from 50 balls) to take a 1-0 in the four-match series.

India were sent into bat and keeper-batter Samson made most of it, smashing seven fours and 10 sixes and he built partnerships of 66 runs for the second wicket with Suryakumar Yadav and 77 runs for the third wicket with Tilak Varma to help India post 202 runs.

Spinners Varun Chakravarthy and Ravi Bishnoi then claimed three wickets each as the Proteas were dismissed for 141 runs in 17.5 overs.

Samson was named the player of the match for his stupendous knock that earned praise from Shah, who is set to take over as chairman of the International Cricket Council from December 1.

“Great start for the Men in Blue in the T20I series against the Proteas! A solid display of character from the young team in holding back a dangerous batting line-up in the chase.

“A special appreciation for @IamSanjuSamson for his second consecutive hundred in T20I’s and the wrist spin of @chakaravarthy29 and Ravi Bishnoi, leading the team to a convincing victory! @BCCI,” Shah wrote on his X handle.

The second match of the series will be played on Sunday.

Shah was elected unopposed as the ICC’s independent chair in August. Son of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Jay has served as the BCCI’s secretary since October 2019 and has also been the chairman of the Asian Cricket Council since January 2021.

Shah was the sole nominee for the ICC chairmanship and will succeed Greg Barclay, who decided not to seek a third term.
