New Delhi: Adani Ports operated Vizhiniam Port welcomed the mothership, Maersk Line Vessel San Fernando, at the outer point on July 12, 2024, in what Adani Ports CEO called a “historic day”.
Today is a historic day for all of us at @Adaniports. A dream has finally come true for Vizhinjam, for Kerala and for India! 🇮🇳

Vizhinjam Port will cut the cost of logistics for importers, said Adani. Since most cargo is routed via Singapore and Colombo, and the goal is to make India a hub for transhipment, he added. The company plans to enhance the port’s capacity to 500 TEUs.
Out of a total capex of Rs 3,800 crore, Adani Ports’ share was Rs 3,600 crore for phase 1 of Vizhinjam Port, CNBCTV18 reported, citing junior Adani. Vizhinjam Port is likely to galvanise traffic in the South, as well as a larger volume from across the country, said Karan Adani.
While Adani Ports is eyeing expansion in the Far East as well as high growth, high population and high manufacturing countries, Adani added that CONCOR is a very strategic asset on account of the Inland Container Depots (ICD) locations they have will add value to the company’s overall value and Adani Group will consider it at the right price.
Vinzhinjam Port features
The Vizhinjam Port has an operational quay length of 600 m with 7,500 container yard slots planned.
The port is expected to have 1.5 million 20-foot equivalent unit (TEUs) container capacity.
A total investment of Rs 20,000 crore is envisaged in the port.
It is India’s only port that lies directly adjacent to a global shipping lane.
This will enable India to have more transhipment traffic, positioning the country as a major hub for international trade routes that connect:
The US
Europe
Africa
The Far East
Once the 800-m berth is complete, Vizhinjam Port will be able to accommodate 2 mother ships simultaneously. A mothership is the moniker given to a large container vessel. Vizhinjam Port’s waters are 1-20 metres deep, making it amenable to the arrival of the world’s largest container vessels.
