Ancient gold, silver hoards found by daily wage workers while digging water pits in Kannur

Kannur: Many from the Chengalai, a remote village in Kannur district couldn’t believe what they saw inside a brass trove that was buried deep one-meter near a house situated adjacent to a rubber plantation. The workers of the rural job guarantee programme were in a shock when they managed to recover gold and pearl ornaments which they initially suspected to be a bomb and threw it.

The first ’discovery’ was made on Friday following which today morning the MNREGA workers managed to unearth one more trove that contained golden plates, but few in numbers.

“It was initially one of the elderly women who saw noticed the trove that was found deep under the soil while they were engaged into digging for water pits which is a usual practice during the monsoon. Initially, they were a bit worried and doubtful as they worried that the trove will contain bomb and hence, they left it in an abundant area. But later due to a suspicion they opened it and was surprised to know that contained gold and silver plates”, said Chengalai panchayat president K Mohanan to News9.

“The workers immediately informed us and later the police reached the spot and checked the metals and then notified the archeology department. The place where the pearls was unearthed once belonged to an aristocratic Hindu ‘Tharavadu’ (Traditional Hindu family) who was wealthy at that point of time. Later they had sold the house and the land to an NRI who is currently staying there”, the panchayat president said.

Eighteen workers led by Chelora Sulochana found the treasure while digging a rain ditch on private property near Parippai Govt LP School Chemagai panchayat in Kannur. As bombs were being found in abandoned and hidden containers in the district, they also thought the container to be an explosive device.

The trove contained 17 pearl beads, 13 gold medallions, four medallions believed to be part of a traditional necklace, five antique rings, a set of earrings and several silver coins.

The ASI has begun an investigation after the officials reached the spot today.
