New Delhi: The Copa America 2024 final between Argentina and Colombia has been delayed by 1:45 minutes from its starting time due to a security breach at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami. Initially, the match was supposed to start at 8 pm ET (5:30 am IST) but the match has been rescheduled to finally kick off at 9:15 pm ET which is 6:45 AM IST in India.
Why is the match delayed?
A large crowd of fans from both Argentina and Colombia arrived at Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium for the Copa America final, but some attempted to enter without valid tickets, causing a gate breach. To ensure security and maintain order within the stadium, CONMEBOL organizers have delayed the match by 45 minutes.
CONBEMOL on X wrote – “We would like to inform you that individuals without tickets will not be allowed entry into the stadium. Only those with purchased tickets will be permitted entry once access is reopened. We also inform you that the match will be delayed by 30 minutes, starting at 8:30 PM (Local Time).”
Now, that has been delayed by another 45 minutes and will kick off soon.
Colombia hopes to win the continental championship for just the second time, while Lionel Scaloni’s team is aiming for a record 16th Copa America trophy and a third straight major tournament victory. Nonetheless, Colombia has won 25 of its past 28 games, going undefeated, since Argentine coach Lorenzo assumed leadership of the group. After the game, Angel di Maria is scheduled to retire, but Lionel Messi’s time playing for his country could end with this championship.
