UEFA Champions League 2024/25: Key fixtures from Wednesday’s matchday five

New Delhi: UEFA Champions League action returned last night and it was a goal fest all around with a total of 40 goals being scored across nine games. Manchester City’s slump continued as they gave up a three goal lead to draw 3-3 with Feyenoord while Arsenal, Leverkusen, Atalanta and Atletico Madrid, all scored more than five. Tonight’s fixtures will look to continue the entertainment from where it left off last night.

Like any other Champions League matchdays, Wednesday’s fixtures also has a few marquee matches that fans can forward to as well. Some key matches are set to stand out due to the high-quality competition on both sides. UEFA’s primary reason for altering the tournament format was to provide more marquee matchups for fans, and so far, it has delivered. Read on to discover tonight’s key fixtures and where you can watch them.

The defending champions face off against the table toppers in this juicy encounter between two of the best sides in the tournament, historically. Judging on current form, Real Madrid are struggling in the tournament and find themselves in the 21st place on the UEFA Champions League table. Liverpool, on the other hand, are the only team in the tournament to maintain a 100% win record and another win tonight, will see them reclaim the top spot on the table.

These two sides most recently met in the 2023 UEFA Champions League final where Los Blancos saw off the Reds to lift the title. Of all the times both teams have met in the competition, Real Madrid hold the advantage, having won seven times whereas Liverpool only boast three victories over the most successful side of the tournament. Tonight’s encounter looks set to change that however with Liverpool looking incredibly dangerous under Arne Slot and Real Madrid on shaky form.

Prediction: Liverpool 3-1 Real Madrid

Aston Villa vs Juventus (1:30 AM IST)

From one match that we’ve seen a lot to one that seems as if it’s happening for the first time, Aston Villa play host to Italian giants Juventus in what promises to be an exciting affair. Villa, playing for the first time in the rebranded UEFA Champions League, started their campaign well and found themselves in the coveted top eight spot before last night’s fixtures. The Villans won their first three games on the trot before losing on the last matchday.

Juventus also began the campaign well with two wins in two but lost their way a bit after that as they haven’t won since Matchday two. The Old Lady haven’t hit the heights of their previous campaigns till now and have been drawing a lot of their games in Italy. They find themselves in 16th position in the UEFA Champions League table heading into the clash. Villa have already been a giant like Bayern Munich at home and given the Old Lady’s struggles, they will be feeling confident of getting another win, despite not being on top form themselves.

Prediction: Aston Villa 2-1 Juventus
