New Delhi: Young tennis sensation Carlos Alcaraz has created abuzz with his commanding over World No.2 Novak Djokovic in straight sets in the Wimbledon 2024 men’s singles final. The 21-year-old Spaniard registered a 6-2, 6-2, 7-6 (7-4) win over the 24-time Grand Slam champion to defend his crown at the All England Lawn Tennis & Croquet Club.
It was a rarefied act by the boy from Murcia to halt the juggernaut of a resilient Djokovic, who loves to push close encounters to deep before clinching them. If Alcaraz announced his prowess by stopping Djokovic’s dominance at last year’s Wimbledon final, the recent win just testified that even Djokovic can be defeated lopsidedly.
Just at 21, Alcaraz has bagged four Grand Slam titles – US Open 2022, Wimbledon 2023, French Open 2024 and now Wimbledon 2024. He also became the sixth player to attain the Channel Slam – winning the French Open and Wimbledon in the same season. Rod Laver, Bjorn Bog, Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer and Djokovic are the other players who have achieved the landmark.
Despite his stronghold on the court with his speed, shot-selection, anticipation, flexibility, Alcaraz gets nervous when it comes to his ability to dance. According to his own admission after the Wimbledon victory, the 21-year-old prodigious was asked on the traditional dance with the winner of women’s singles (Barbora Krejcikova). The Spain tennis youngster replied:
“Let’s say, could be better I guess. Yeah, let’s see tonight, but I try to do my best.”

The Spain tennis youngster joined an elite club of players who have bagged the Wimbledon in successive years in the Open Era. The list includes Rod Laver (1968-1969), John Newcombe (1970-1971), Bjorn Borg (1976-1980), John McEnroe (1983-1984), Boris Becker (1985-1986), Pete Sampras (1993-1995, 1997-2000), Roger Federer (2003-2007), and Novak Djokovic (2014-2015, 2018-2021).
