Electricity charges in Tamil Nadu to go up from July 1, details inside

Chennai: The Tamil Nadu government has increased electricity tariffs by 4.83% effective from July 1, 2024, impacting both consumption and fixed charges for all consumers. Electricity charges have increased from 20 paise to 55 paise per unit.

According to the notification issued by the Tamil Nadu Electricity Regulatory Authority, the tariff for 0-400 units of electricity has been increased by 20 cents from Rs.4.60 to Rs.4.80 per unit.

The tariff for 401-500 units has increased from Rs.6.15 to Rs.6.45 per unit. For 501 to 600 units of electricity, the charge was Rs 8.15, but now it has been increased to Rs 8.55. Electricity tariff for 601-800 units has been fixed at Rs.9.65 from Rs.9.20.

Electricity tariff for 801-1000 units was Rs.10.20 per unit. Now it has increased by 50 paise to Rs.10.70. Similarly, the tariff for power consumption above 1000 units has also increased from Rs.11.25 to Rs.11.80 per unit by 55 paise.

Power tariff hike wouldn’t affect 2.47 crore domestic consumers, says Govt

Despite the increase, Tamil Nadu maintains the lowest electricity tariffs compared to other major states, with the government continuing to heavily subsidize electricity. The decision has sparked discussions and concerns among residents, with some expressing dissatisfaction and questioning the government’s justification for the hike amidst economic challenges.

It is to be noted that for the third successive year, the Tamil Nadu Electricity Regulatory Commission has hiked the electricity tariff for all categories of consumers.

After hiking the power tariff by 4.83% for all consumers, the government has said that the tariff hike would not affect at least one crore of the 2.47 crore domestic consumers in the state, who would continue to get the first 100 units for free. However, MSMEs have expressed their distress over their hike, saying even a 0.35 paise hike will be a big blow to already struggling small industries.
