New Delhi: We live in a world too influence by social media, and while some of these trends are safe, there are others that can do a great deal of harm. There are two sides of this coin and as per experts, it is imperative to be aware of the good and bad alike to mitigate the risk of long-term damage if any. A dentist, too, recently revealed such popular trends that are actually detrimental for health – one of the most popular ones being oil pulling.
In Ayurveda, oil pulling is seen as go-to technique to remove bacteria and promote saliva production. This practice is relied upon by many, even celebrities, and it involves swishing oil in the mouth for five minutes till it turns foamy and then spitting it out. However, as per experts, this technique may not be as effective as it is believed to be. And if it is used instead of convenitonal brushing and flossing, it can increase the risk of cavities and gum disease. Read on to know about other such trends that do more harm than good.
At home tooth filling: There are many videos on social media that depict people filling their own teeth at home with nail files in other to straighten them. For people with uneven teeth, this became a cheap and quick solution as compared to seeking help from dentist. However, the risk here is that teeth do not regenerate like nails do. Filing them can damage the nail enamel and cause irreparable damage. It can increase the risk of tooth decay later.
DIY tooth whitening: Tooth whitening at home might appear like one of the most common practices but again, it is not safe. From brushing the teeth with apple cider vinehar to using baking soda, there are many things that people try at home without realising that it has serious health effects. These can erode the tooth enamel if used in excess and cause sensitivity and cavities.
Closing gaps with rubber bands: Tooth gaps are common, as per the American Dental Association, one in four adults have them in the front teeth. To remedy this, many people turn to gap bands. However, apart from only giving pain and discomfort, they are not designed for orthodontic purposes, which can cause persistent gum pain and teeth pain while eating or speaking. They can also cause to be misaligned.
DIY dental filling: In some cases, instead of filing the teeth with a nail filer, people use DIT dental filling kits at home. These are often used without proper sterilisation and it can introduce bacteria in the cavity that can break your teeth or cause cracks that may require costly repairs. Any decay in tooth cavity needs to be removed properly with a drill and then filled with precision.
