New Delhi: Yogeshwar Dutt, who won a bronze medal at the London Olympics 2012, is confident that wrestling will yet again bring laurels for India at the approaching Paris Olympics and the medal tally could be more than one if the participating wrestlers get a favourable draw. India will be represented by a six-member wrestling contingent in Paris where the sport begins on August 5.
It is noteworthy that only Aman Sehrawat (57kg) could qualify in the men’s category but the women’s category sees five members qualified for five of six Olympic weight divisions. The missing division from the list is 62 kg. India have continued their medal glory in wrestling since the 2008 Beijing Games where the legendary Sushil Kumar won a bronze.
“A lot will depend on the draw. If India get a favourable draw, then I am expecting three medals,” PTI Videos quoted Yogeshwar Dutt as saying on the sidelines of an AIFF event.
“In the last four consecutive Olympics, we got medals from Wrestling. So I hope, wish, and pray the fifth time in a row, wrestling will bring a medal for the nation. I wish all the wrestlers all the very best. I think they are well-prepared,” Yogeshwar said.
The Olympic champion weighed in on the fact that wrestling has brought India the most number of medals after hockey. Wrestling has given seven medals to the nation, being ahead of all other Olympic sports. The former India wrestler turned BJP leader, feels that India will return with its best-ever show in the Olympics.
“Wrestling is without doubt the number one individual Olympic sport for India. I am expecting the Indian contingent to win more than 10 medals,” he said.
