Accused in murder case beaten to death in Thrissur, three arrested

Thrissur : Reigniting fears of gang wars in central Kerala, a criminal who was facing charges in murder cases was hacked to death at Poochatty in Thrissur during the late hours of Sunday.

The deceased is Satheesh (48), a native of Nadathara. Police arrested three people over suspected involvement in the murder.
People found Satheesh in a pool of blood on the road near Poochatty school around 11.30 pm on Sunday.

Police sources from Thrissur say that people alerted police and called ambulance thinking that he was injured in a road accident. Satheesh succumbed to his injuries before police took him to the hospital.

Satheesh was the main accused in the murders of goon leader Chapli Biju and Malankara Varghese. Ollur police said that criminal cases are also registered against the accused Jomon.

A forensic team will visit the crime scene for evidence collection. It is learnt that an altercation between Satheesh and Jomon, one of the accused during a birthday party at a bar led to the murder.

Following the altercation, Jomon and two of his friends arranged a meeting with Satheesh for conciliatory talks. But the trio attacked Satheesh with a machete.

It was a month ago that a youth named Manu was hacked to death by a gang of three using hockey sticks. The police arrested all the three. Thrissur has been witnessing similar incidents in the recent days.

Meanwhile, the Kerala High Court in over a month alone has ordered to release of 34 persons after finding that their detention was illegal. Apart from preventive detention, the court also cut short externment ordered against persons under KAAPA for involvement in multiple criminal cases.

Meanwhile, a 36-year-old named Norbert was arrested by the Kochi police for violating the KAAPA order wherein he was prevented from entering the Kochi city premises. In the past six months, there has been a rise in the arrest as per KAAPA by the police.

KAAPA is a special law enacted by the state government in 2007 to curb anti-social elements.
