Liverpool U18s walk off twice after alleged racism abuse in German youth tournament

New Delhi: Liverpool’s Under-18s team found themselves in a harrowing ordeal during their matches in the Bundesliga Cup youth tournament in Schwabisch Hall, Germany. In a shocking display of racial intolerance, a player of the Liverpool squad was subjected to alleged racist abuse in two straight games while competing in a youth competition in Germany. The incidents led the team to walk off the pitch in protest on both occasions.

The first incident occurred on Friday during a match against Hoffenheim. The young Liverpool player reported being racially abused by an opponent prompting immediate action from the coaching staff. The entire team along with the coaching staff united in solidarity and left the pitch underscoring the gravity of the situation.

To make matters worse the same player was targeted again during a match on Saturday, this time against Eintracht Frankfurt. Faced with a repeat of the abhorrent behavior the team once more decided to walk off the pitch sending a powerful message against racism.

After the Friday match incident, Liverpool released a statement calling for an urgent investigation.

The club statement read: “We are proud of our player for his prompt actions in reporting the incident and the maturity of his response. He and any of his team-mates affected are being supported by the academy safeguarding team.”

After the match, Frankfurt sporting director Timmo Hardung spoke to the German newspaper Bild and responded to the accusations suggesting it was a misunderstanding. He explained that the accused player used the word “digga,” which is slang for “bro” or “dude” in German. Hardung emphasized that Frankfurt’s youth academy values multiculturalism and rejects racism, adding that the club takes such accusations seriously and hopes to resolve the misunderstanding.

Both Hoffenheim and Frankfurt, along with the Bundesliga Cup organizers have been contacted for further comments.
