New Delhi: Sift Kaur Samra is a name that no more requires an introduction having established her credentials as one of the finest young shooters in India at present. Sift, who shattered the world record to win her maiden gold medal at the Asian Games 2022, will be looking to repeat her heroics on her Olympics debut in Paris this year.
Having impressed in her brief stint at the international level, Sift is one of the strongest contenders for a medal for India in shooting. The 22-year-old will be competing in the 50-metre rifle, three positions event at the Paris Games and will be bidding to make history. Sift rose to prominence after her record-shattering gold feat in the Asian Games in Hangzhou.
Sift Kaur Samra’s rise and rise
Sift was born on September 09, 2001, in Punjab. She comes from a humble background and was good in academics right from her childhood. Her parents come from an agricultural background and are in the rice-selling business. Sift was just 9 when she was introduced to shooting by her cousin.
Her cousin, who is a shotgun shooter, casually introduced Sift to the sport by taking her to a shooting range in Punjab. Though Sift never gave up on her studies to take up shooting full-time at a young age, her love for the sport grew with time. Sift successfully cleared the NEET exam and was pursuing her MBBS degree in Faridkot.
However, she dropped out of the medical course to focus on shooting and soon made a name for herself while representing India at the highest level. Sift’s parents also played a vital role in her journey and supported her in her quest for glory. Her father installed a 50m range at their house in Punjab with paper targets to help Sift practice.
Sift has witnessed a remarkable rise in the last few years. She has won a total of five medals at the Juinor World Cup and clinched a bronze medal in the 50m rifle 3P on her debut at the ISSF World Cup in 2022 and followed it up. She also won a silver medal at the Women’s 50 metre rifle three positions team in the Asian Games 2022.
