Why Harshit Rana and Mayank Yadav’s India call-up is not good news for KKR & LSG

Why Harshit Rana and Mayank Yadav’s India call-up is not good news for KKR & LSG

New Delhi: In an ideal scenario, a young player getting selected to represent the Indian team is good news for any Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise. However, India call-ups for Harshit Rana, Mayank Yadav and Nitish Kumar Reddy might not be the best news for their respective IPL teams with just one month left for them to finalise their retentions ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction.

Mayank and Nitish earned their maiden call-ups while Harshit was retained in the T20I squad after his maiden call-up during India’s tour of Sri Lanka last month. The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) pacer was selected in India’s squad for the ODI series against Sri Lanka. However, he didn’t feature in a single game and is yet to make his India debut.

As per the retention rules announced by the BCCI for the IPL 2025 mega auction, a franchise can retain a total of six players either via direct retention or by using the Right to Match (RTM) option during the mega auction. The franchises can have a maximum of 5 capped and a maximum of only 2 uncapped players in their final six retentions.

While a capped player will come under the top three brackets of Rs 18, 14 or 11 crore respectively, an uncapped player can be retained for a lower sum of Rs 4 crore only. Currently, all three of Harshit, Mayank and Nitish are uncapped players as they are yet to make their debuts for India. However, their selection in India’s squad for the Bangladesh T20Is means all three can soon make their international debut and become capped players.

Why franchises will be hurt by the trio’s selection?

Harshit, Mayank and Nitish are all expected to make their debuts in the T20I series against Bangladesh as none of the players from India’s Test squad in the ongoing series against Bangladesh have been selected for the T20Is. Mayank is expected to partner with Harshit in the pace attack for India while Nitish can be the 2nd all-rounder alongside Hardik Pandya.

If all three manage to play even a game each against Bangladesh, they will become designated capped players ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction. That would mean their franchises Kolkata Knight Riders, Lucknow Super Giants and Sunrisers Hyderabad will not be able to retain them as uncapped players and will have to pay a premium to keep a hold of them.

Their respective franchises will have to slot them into the capped bracket or release them and hope that they can get them back by using the RTM (Right to Match) option during the IPL 2025 mega auction. As per the latest rules, if a franchise retains a total of six players, including 5 capped and 1 uncapped, they will have to shell out a whopping Rs 79 crore from their overall purse of Rs 120 crore.

While Mayank Yadav and Nitish Kumar Reddy earned their maiden India call-ups for the upcoming T20I series against Bangladesh, Harshit Rana has also been included in the squad. India call-ups for the trio is not good news for their respective IPL teams.  Cricket Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
