Sunrisers Hyderabad likely to release Umran Malik ahead of IPL 2025 – Report

New Delhi: Even though the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 lies more than a year ahead, the news of franchises bringing in a few changes has already started making headlines. Although nothing remains confirmed as such, many media reports have claimed a few new inclusions, be it a player or a new coach, and also some players who are set to be released by the franchise.

One of these latest developments has surfaced the name of pace spearhead Umran Malik, who made headlines in 2021-22 with his lethal pace and sizzling deliveries, clocking above 150 kmph for fun. Malik currently plies his trade for Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the IPL, who are reportedly planning to release him ahead of the next season. SRH were the finalists of the IPL 2024 and finished as the runners-up.

Notably, Umran made his debut for the Orange Army in 2021 and shot to fame for his pace. SRH retained the right-arm seamer for Rs 4 crore in the following season and groomed him to become the next Indian bowling sensation. However, things have been taking a downturn for him lately as his performance has declined after 2022 and the Jammu and Kashmir fast bowler could play just one game in 2024.

As per a report in News24 Sports, SRH is mulling over releasing Umran ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction later this year. Umran has been wayward with his line and length and his poor economy is one of the reasons why SRH is looking ahead of him. He spent most of the 2024 season on the bench and SRH wants his alternative to refurbish the team at the mega auction.

Teams showing interest in Umran?

The report also mentioned that several teams have shown interest in signing Malik for IPL 2025 after it was known to them that SRH plan on releasing the Indian speedster. Even though he lacks form as of now, he will certainly be one of the hot picks for the franchises if he goes under the hammer at the auction later this year.

His IPL career foretells that in 2021, he took two wickets in three games for SRH and achieved his best performance in 2022, featuring in 14 games and taking 22 wickets. His career graph started falling down in IPL 2023 and he could just feature in nine games in the previous two IPL seasons.

If he gets released, SRH’s purse will swell by Rs. 4 crores ahead of the mega auction. Meanwhile, there have also been reports of BCCI increasing the salary cap of the franchises for IPL 2025 to 120 crores for the auction from the current Rs. 90 crore bracket.

According to a report, speedster Umran Malik is likely to be released by the Sunrisers Hyderabad ahead of the IPL 2025 after a string of poor performances in the recent editions.  Cricket Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
