New Delhi: Right-arm pacer Asitha Fernando has been announced as the replacement for Dushmantha Chameera for the upcoming T20I matches against India. Chameera withdrew from the white-ball games due to illness handing the Sri Lanka team a big blow. The pacer has a fair amount of experience with the Indian team in the Indian Premier League and holds an edge over the others.
Meanwhile, Fernando has played three T20Is so far for the island nation and joins the trio of Matheesha Pathirana, Nuwan Thushara and Binura Fernando in the 16-member squad. The player last played a T20I match against India back in 2022 and in the last few years, has mostly played the red-ball format for the team.
Sri Lanka, who have been experiencing a poor form in the recent events, would aim to get back in the groove during the home series against the Men in Blue. Both the sides will lock horns in six white-ball games (three T20Is and three ODIs) and the Lankans would want to make full use of the home conditions and come out victorious. Meanwhile, the Indian team is high on confidence after winning the T20 World Cup 2024 title and the Zimbabwe series post that.
