Smita Sabharwal row: Advocacy groups demand action against IAS officer

Union Bank of India Differently-Abled Employees Federation (UBIDEF), Doctors with disabilities, sought action against IAS officer Smita Sabharwal for her remarks against the disabled community.

Sabharwal, who is the member-secretary of Telangana Finance Commission, made controversial remarks on social media platform X against job quotas for the differently-abled in civil service exams. She said that the service required physical fitness and that the demands of the job make it difficult for those with disabilities.

In a letter, the UBIDEF sought action against the bureaucrat under Section 92 of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016, which pertains to atrocities against the disabled. The remarks stand in contrast to principles of equality enshrined in the constitution, the letter read.

Calling her comment premeditated, they said it undermined the contributions of the community and is against her responsibility to safeguard and implement the constitution.

Doctors with Disabilities NGO demands action:

Doctors with disabilities NGO also asked for action against the ‘ableist’ comments made by Sabharwal.

Dr Satendra Singh, a member of the Doctors with Disabilities group, in a letter to the Telangana chief minister, said Sabharwal’s remarks reflect an “ableist mindset” that contradicts the inclusive ethos promoted by the government.

Telangana minister condemn remarks:

Minister Dasari Anasuya also known as Seethakka condemned the IAS officer’s remark and said that she will raise the issue with chief minister Reddy and that Sabharwal is harbouring a feudal ideology.

However, Telangana Deputy CM Bhatti Vikramarka said that Sabhrwal shared her opinion on social media platform and that she is free to do so. “It is completely her personal opinion. Those comments have nothing to do with the government. We are a people’s government and will act democratically in every matter.”
