Watch: Mancherial govt school students use umbrellas in classroom after rainwater leaks

Students at Krishnapalli Zilla Parishad Secondary School in Mancherial district of Telangana used umbrellas to attend classes after rainwater leaked through the roof of the building, videos showed.

The videos which went viral, showed students sitting with umbrellas on the benches of the classroom to protect themselves from the seeping rainwater. The water seepage into the walls of the building resulted in cracks developing on the ceiling of the classroom.

The school building has been reportedly dilapidated for many years and there has been no response from government officials even after repeated requests. To protest this neglect, students sat with umbrellas in the class for the last 2 days.

The situation affects 54 students in the school and despite repair works of Rs 2 lakh it continues to persist, a teacher said. The school officials urged concerned authorities to fix the leaks.

District Educational Officer (DEO) Yadaiah said that measures were being taken to address it and an engineer was sent to the school to find the cause of seepage to solve the problem. He said that the seepage of rainwater into the walls could be due to poor maintenance.

Parents of the students also expressed worry that the school building may collapse at anytime due to heavy rain. The parents also asked the school to restart classes only after repairs to the building are done. Locals also requested the government to approve additional classrooms under Amma Adarsha Pathashala scheme.
