Archery at Paris Olympics 2024: India advance to knockout stage in women’s team event

New Delhi: Indian archers advanced to the knockout round of the women’s individual event of recurve archery on Thursday (July 25) at the Esplanade des Invalides in Paris in the Paris Olympics 2024. Although the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympics 2024 will take place on Friday (July 26), the Indian archers kicked off the campaign for the qualification round a day before.

Ankita Bhakat, Deepika Kumari, and Bhajan Kaur were all in action for the women’s individual event. After the completion of 12 sets of the qualification round, India finished fourth in the overall standings with an aggregate score of 1983 points to reach the quarterfinals round.

Ankita Bhakat finished as the top-ranked Indian archer in the event after grabbing her season best score of 666 points, eventually ending at the 11th spot. Bhajan Kaur (659 points) and senior archer Deepika Kumari (658 points) secured the 22nd and 23rd place, respectively, among the 64 archers that participated in the ranking round. With the Indian triumvirate’s aggregate score reading 1983, the country secured fourth place to book a quarterfinal spot in the women’s team event.

South Korea archer breaks Olympics and world record

South Korea topped the charts with Sihyeon Lim holding the pole position after shattering the world record with a score of 694 fired from 72 arrows. She broke the Olympic record of compatriot An San (680) and world record held by another compatriot Kang Chae Young (692). Suhyeon Nam of South Korea finished second with a score of 688 while China’s Yang Xiaolei was at the third spot with 673.

The 26-year-old Ankita Bhakat will face Poland’s Wioleta Myszor in the Round of 64. Bhajan Kaur is scheduled to compete with Syifa Nurafifah Kamal of Indonesia in Round of 64, while Deepika Kumari will take on Estonia’s Reena Pernat in the same round.

The main draws of women’s individual event will start on July 30 and the medal rounds will take place on August 3. Meanwhile, the women’s team event for recurve archery starts on July 28. India will face either Netherlands or France in their quarterfinal clash.
