New Delhi: Gujarat Titans (GT) captain Shubman Gill was handed a fine as his team was found to have maintained a slow over-rate in their Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 clash against Delhi Capitals (DC) in Ahmedabad on Saturday. It was a clash amongst the table-toppers, and GT registered their highest successful run-chase in the IPL, while it was a highest successful run-chase against DC as well.
“As this was his team’s first offence of the season under Article 2.22 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct, which pertains to minimum over-rate offences, Gill was fined INR 12 lakhs,” the IPL said in a statement.
Gill has joined the long list of skippers who were slapped with an over-rate penalty this season. Axar Patel (DC), Sanju Samson and Riyan Parag (Rajasthan Royals), Hardik Pandya (Mumbai Indians), Rajat Patidar (Royal Challengers Bengaluru), and Rishabh Pant (Lucknow Super Giants) are among the captains who have been fined so far.
It is understood that the IPL has done away with banning the players for repeating the over-rate offences and will only be handed demerit points and fines, in addition to the in-field restrictions.
What went on in Ahmedabad?
It was the first afternoon game of the Titans at home and the Motera vicinity of Ahmedabad was boiling at 40 degrees Celsius. Gill had chosen to bowl first in the hot conditions and the game saw multiple stoppages as players struggled in the extreme weather. DC went on to post 203 for 8 which was indeed a reputable score but GT chased it down with seven wickets in hand and four balls to spare.
Jos Buttler was adjudged the Player of the Match for scoring an unbeaten 97 off 54 balls in the chase, laced with 11 fours and four sixes. The victory has taken GT to the top of the points table with five wins in seven games, and they are now at par with DC on 10 points, but stay ahead on net run rate. This game marked the halfway point in the league stage as all ten teams had played seven games each after its conclusion.
It was a first sanction for Gujarat Titans (GT) concerning the over rate offences in IPL 2025 and they have become the sixth team to be penalised for the same. Cricket Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
