New Delhi: India will face Sri Lanka in the second T20I of the three-match series at Pallekele International Cricket Stadium in Pallekele on Sunday. After taking a 1-0 lead against the hosts, Gautam Gambhir-coached India will look to continue the winning momentum to sweep the series while Sri Lanka will aim at a turnaround to level the series and take things forward to the decider.
Gambhir, who officially began his head coach stint with the 1st T20I against the Lankans, would be certainly happy with the result. Sri Lanka had opted to bowl first on Saturday against the visitors who took advantage and put up a huge total on the scoreboard. Headlined by skipper Suryakumar Yadav’s quickfire 58, Rishabh Pant’s crucial 49, and Yashasvi Jaiswal’s opening 40, India posted 213/7 in 20 overs.
Coming out to chase, Sri Lanka were well on the track to chase the target down as Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis stitched an opening stand of 84 runs followed by Nissanka and Kusal Perera adding 56 runs for the second wicket. However, their train derailed in the 14th over as the Indian bowlers took wickets in quick succession and restricted them to 170 in 19.2 overs to win the game 43 runs. Riyan Parag was a surprise pick of the bowlers, bagging three wickets followed by double strikes of Arshdeep Singh and Axar Patel. Mohammed Siraj played his part with a wicket as well.
