New Delhi: Racist chants have recently sparked up controversy in Copa America 2024, with Enzo Fernandez chanting derogatory chants about the French team in the celebration of Argentina’s Copa title win. Similarly, on the other side of the world, racist chants became a norm in the UEFA Euro 2024. Several countries were investigated for racist and discriminatory comments to the teams and players, and UEFA has brought a resolution to tackle such acts.
On Wednesday, UEFA ordered seven football federations to pay fines totalling 230,000 euros ($250,000 or about 20 million Indian Rupees) because of racist and discriminatory actions by fans at Euro 2024. The football governance body is yet to reveal the details of the incidents that led them to charge the football federations with fines. The incidents mostly involved fans from Balkan countries, who were continuously passing out derogatory chants at players and teams.
Croatia has to pay the largest fine of 50,000 euros ($54,000 or about 4.1 million Indian Rupees) for incidents during each of its three matches. During a group-stage game in Hamburg, Croatian and Albanian fans chanted anti-Serbia slogans together. UEFA announced an investigation into the incident, and the Serbian federation threatened to leave the tournament if no action was taken.
On Wednesday, the Albanian football federation received a total fine of 30,000 euros ($32,500 or about 2.5 million Indian Rupees) for racist behaviour in games against Croatia and Spain.
