New Delhi: Former India pacer Ashish Nehra showed his witty side as he hilariously trolled Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal after the 1st T20I between India and Sri Lanka at the Pallekele International Stadium in Pallekele on Saturday. Jaiswal played a quickfire knock of 40 runs of 21 balls to help India beat Sri Lanka by 21 runs and get off to a winning start in the three-match series.
Jaiswal, who was part of India’s squad in the T20 World Cup 2024 but didn’t get a chance to play in the tournament, once again showed why he is highly rated with his fiery knock. Jaiswal was left warming the bench in the T20 World Cup as Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli opened the batting for India in the competition.
During the post-match interview, Nehra highlighted the same while poking fun at Jaiswal. The former India pacer told the young opener that his fellow expert on the panel, Ajay Jadeja asked him what would have been the difference if Kohli and Rohit were still opening for India in T20Is. Nehra said if Rohit-Kohli were still opening, Jaiswal would probably still be on the bench and wouldn’t have been able to showcase his range of strokes.
“Ajay Jadeja asked you what’s the difference when Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma were there (to open in T20Is). According to me, there is just one difference. If Virat and Rohit were still playing this format, then whatever strokes we saw from you today, you would have played those in the nets. Now you are getting to play those shots in the match because they (Virat and Rohit) are not there,” said Nehra, leaving Jaiswal speechless and laughing.
Nehraji never disappoints 😂

Batting first in the 2nd T20I, India rode on Jaiswal’s quickfire 40 and a sensational 58 off 26 deliveries from skipper Suryakumar Yadav to post a strong total of 213 runs on the board in 20 overs. In reply, Sri Lanka were skittled out for 170 runs in 19.2 overs to suffer a crushing defeat in the series opener.
Riyan Parag was the pick of the bowlers for India despite bowling just 1.2 overs in the game. Parag finished with a three-wicket haul while conceding only three runs in his spell to turn the game in India’s favour.
Can Yashasvi Jaiswal make the opening slot his own in T20Is?
With both Rohit and Kohli retired from T20Is, Jaiswal has a chance to cement his spot as an opener for India in T20Is. The swashbuckling left-hander has not put a foot wrong for India in his career so far and has done well across formats. Jaiswal has 683 runs to his name in 28 T20Is at an exceptional strike rate of 164.18 and will be hoping to continue his stellar show in the upcoming matches.
