New Delhi: Bangladesh pacer Tanzim Hasan Sakib has been fined 15 percent of his match fee for breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct after an on-field altercation with Nepal skipper Rohit Paudel during the teams’ face-off at the Arnos Vale Ground in Kingstown on June 16, Sunday. Sakib has also been slapped with one demerit point by the ICC for his misconduct in the T20 World Cup 2024 Group D clash.
It happened just after the end of the third over of Nepal’s innings when Tanzim, after bowling a delivery, “walked towards Nepal batter Rohit Paudel in an aggressive manner and made inappropriate physical contact”, as stated in the ICC release. Tanzim looked to have instigated the altercation as both players had a few words exchanged followed by plenty of hand gesturing and the on-field umpire intervening to calm things down.
What does the rule say?
This incident marks Tanzim’s first offence within a 24-month period as he was found guilty of breaching Article 2.12 of the ICC Code of Conduct, which deals with “inappropriate physical contact with a Player, Player Support Personnel, Umpire, Match Referee or any other person (including a spectator during an International Match).”
The charges were levelled by on-field umpires Ahsan Raza and Sam Nogajski, with third umpire Jayaraman Madanagopal and fourth umpire Kumar Dharmasena providing support. The fast bowler admitted to the offence and accepted the sanction proposed by match referee Richie Richardson which ruled out the need for a formal hearing.
Post-match, Paudel downplayed the incident saying that there’s nothing between the two. “Just he came and he told me to hit. And I said, go and bowl. Nothing else,” Paudel said. Meanwhile, Tanzim was adjudged the Player of the Match for his spell of 4 for 7 and is currently the joint second-highest wicket-taker in the ongoing T20 World Cup with nine wickets in four games. Having qualified for the Super Eight stage, Bangladesh will face the mighty Australia on June 21.
