New Delhi: India will be up in the medal race for the third day in a row as Day 4 at the Paris Olympics 2024 will see the Indian mixed team of 10m air pistol vying for a bronze medal against South Korea. This would surely be the day’s highlight as Manu Bhaker, who won an individual bronze in the same event on Sunday, will be teamed up with Sarabjot Singh, eyeing another bronze and a second medal for India.
The Indian pair qualified for the bronze match, finishing third in the qualification round on Monday, with a score of 580 and also bettering South Korea by a point. If Manu and Sarabjot can clinch the medal, the former will become the first-ever Indian athlete to bag two medals in the same edition in Olympics history. Also up in the medal bid will be shooter Prithviraj Tondaiman but will have to succeed in the qualification round of the men’s trap event first to clear the way for the final.
The third day had to start with a group match of ace shuttler pair Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty but it was cancelled due to one of their opponents pulling out due to an injury. They thus qualified for the quarterfinals stage. Women’s pair of Tanisha Crasto and Ashwini Ponappa were downed for the second consecutive time and are all but out. Shooters Ramita Jindal and Arjun Babuta bowed out finishing seventh and fourth respectively in the 10m air rifle finals, ending India’s hopes of a medal on the third day. The men’s hockey team held on to a draw with Argentina in a Pool B clash.
Lakshya Sen beat Belgium’s Julien Carraggi in straight games in a group-stage clash while the men’s archery team was defeated 2-6 in the quarterfinals. Paddler Manika Batra ended India’s day with a clinical win (4-0) over France’s Prithika Pavade to cruise to the Round of 16 of women’s singles.
Nonetheless on Day 4, India have a plethora of events coming up on their way and it will start with Tondaiman’s qualification round, shortly followed up with Bhaker’s bronze match. Balraj Panwar will be another notable competitor as he participates in the men’s singles sculls quarterfinals. India plays Ireland in a men’s hockey match and archers will be up in individual events. Satwik-Chirag and Tanisha-Ashwini will play a group-stage clash and the India boxers will also be in action
