New Delhi: Manu Bhaker has become a household name since clinching the bronze medal at the Paris 2024 Games. The young shooter from Haryana scripted history by becoming the first Indian woman to win a shooting medal at the Olympics after claiming the third spot in the 10m Air Pistol event on Sunday. Bhaker has the opportunity to make further history today but did you know about the man behind Manu’s success?
Jaspal Rana, the former Indian Olympian and current coach of Manu, has played a key role in Manu’s Paris achievements. The player-coach relationship slumped to an all-time low after the shooter failed to win a medal in the Tokyo Games, due to a pistol malfunction. But the duo returned together for the greater good and their reunion bore fruit as India won its first medal in Paris on Sunday.
While Manu is the talk of the town across the globe, Jaspal is looking for a second chance. The former Indian shooter has been jobless for the last three years and while national pride is of great value to him, making ends meet is the biggest problem in Rana’s life that needs instant solution.
“I am nobody, I just did a job Manu wanted me to help her out with. But are people aware I have had no monthly salary from the National Rifle Association of India or any other agency over the last three years? I am more than happy Manu has shown what she can do, I only tapped into her potential. I need to go back to India and start afresh. I need to find a job to earn money,” said Jaspal in an exclusive interview with RevSportz.
Jaspal faced a backlash that he didn’t deserve after Manu’s pistol malfunctioned at the Tokyo Games. He said that all those who labelled him as the villain wanted his interviews.
The former Olympian broke down while speaking about his struggles in the last three years.
“Manu is the star, I am just a jobless coach. I am nobody. Manu made me relevant by asking me to help her. I need to find a job soon, these three years have been very tough for me. I never wanted to talk about this. Anyone going to get me a job, I have to ask around when I get back to India,” he said.
