New Delhi: The Centre said it is not considering any proposal for an 8th Pay Commission though it has received 2 representations requesting the same, minister of state for finance Pankaj Chaudhary said in written response to a question in the Rajya Sabha. “No such proposal is under consideration of the government, at present,” the minister said, adding that 2 representations to this effect were received in June this year.
All about 8th Pay Commission
Finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman had earlier ruled out constituting the 8th pay panel during her Budget speech. The Pay Commission is set up at 10-year intervals, with the 7th pay commission having been set up in 2014. This panel’s recommendations came into effect in 2016.
To be sure, the Centre compensated government employees, in service and retired, for the rise in inflation by hiking the dearness allowance recently. This revision is done every 6 months. The Pay Commission is set up up periodically to consider and recommend changes to the pay salary structure and benefits offered to central government employees in line with prevailing i9nflation, the state of the economy and changes in job descriptions.
The following employees are covered by the Pay Commission recommendations:
Industrial and non-industrial central government staffers
All India Services personnel
Union Territories’ personnel
Indian Audit and Accounts Department officers and employees
Regulatory body members excluding the Reserve Bank of India. These bodies must be set up under laws enacted by the Parliament
And Supreme Court officers and employees
The 7th Pay Commission submitted its report within 18th months of being constituted and was tasked with sharing interim updates during this period. The 7th Pay Commission was chaired by Justice (retd) Ashok Kumar Mathur and counted Vivek Rae and Rathin Roy as members. The Pay Commission is also supported by a secretariat and consultants among others.
