Ten of the 12 gates of Srisailam dam were lifted on Thursday for controlled release of water downstream to Nagarjuna Sagar. A total of 3,17,940 cusecs of water is being released through the spillway while 3,42,026 cusecs of flood water from upstream areas Jurala, Sunkesula continue to surge.
The Full Reservoir Level (FRL) is 885 feet while it is currently at 884.40 feet. The total water storage capacity is at 215.8 TMC ft while the current storage is at 212.4 TMCs. Power generation is ongoing at left and right hydropower stations while releasing 60,000 cusecs of water to Sagar region and 25,000 cusecs are being channeled to Pothireddypadu regulator. 1,600 cusecs are allocated to Kalvakurti lift scheme.
With Srisailam nearing FRL level, hopes of Nagarjuna Sagar also reaching up to FRL level have been revived. Water for two crops in the Krishna delta would be guaranteed if Nagarjuna Sagar reaches FRL level. As only two months of the monsoon are left, all irrigation projects on Krishna are likely to get filled up.
This comes after weeks of drought like conditions and since Srisailam reservoir is receiving significant inflows, it raised hopes among farmers of the Rayalaseema region. Rayalaseema projects will get water from Pothireddypadu head regulator, as per rules. A severe rainfall deficit last year meant there was no water release for the KC Canal.
Tourists are rushing to the spot even as the dam is brimming with water and making the downstream a sight to behold.
