Telugu origin candidates lose in UK parliamentary elections

Hyderabad: Even as the Labour Party cruised to victory in a landslide in 2024 General Elections in the United Kingdom, some Indian-origin candidates saw mixed results. Two telugu origin candidates were defeated in their respective races.

Uday Nagaraju, a writer, contested the North Bedfordshire seat from  Labor Party in this election but lost the race to Conservative Party candidate Richard Fuller by a margin of over 5,000 votes. Fuller got 19,981 votes while Nagaraju got 14,567 votes.

The writer hails from Shanigaram in Koheda Mandal of Siddipet District in Telangana. He completed his PG in Administration from  University College of London, UK and is reportedly a relative of former Prime Minister of India PV Narasimha Rao.

Chandra Kanneganti contested from the Stoke on Trent Central seat on behalf of the Conservative Party and lost to Gareth Snell of Labour Party. He came in third position with 6,221 votes.

Hailing from Kotagiri in Nizamabad district, Chandra went to London after completing his studies and settled there. He entered politics while serving as a general practitioner and served twice as a councillor and once as mayor of Stoke-on-Trent.

Labour won 412 seats while the Conservative Party were restricted to 121 seats, ousting Rishi Sunak as the Prime Minister. Keir Starmer will shortly meet the King to formally become the next PM of the UK.
