New Delhi: Ace Indian javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra will have many eyes on the moment of his spear when he begins his quest to defend his gold medal at the Paris Olympics 2024. The 26-year-old arrived at the Olympic village in the French capital on Tuesday after completing final training periods in Finland, Germany, and Turkiye (the last spot before Paris).
Neeraj basked into glory in Tokyo three years ago when he became the first sportsperson from the country to win a medal in any track and field disciplines at the Olympics. He hurled the javelin at the distance of 87.58m to clinch the gold medal in the men’s javelin throw event. The Haryana-born athlete became only the second individual gold medallist after Abhinav Bindra’s gold in men’s 10m air rifle event at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
The Olympic medallist has been a prominent figure in the Indian sporting landscape, inspiring a breed of athletes to look up to sports, influencing authorities to bring massive changes in the ecosystem of sports at different levels, and most importantly, becoming the unofficial brand ambassador of javelin throw in India.
Neeraj has won the World Championships gold and defended his Asian Games gold besides winning the Diamond League title last year to further amplify his stature in the elite athletes of the world. He started the year with his season best throw of 88.36m to finish second at the Diamond League (Doha leg) in May. He was just margins behind rival Jakub Vadlejch’s 88.68m as the two will be frontrunners to win the gold in Paris.
The Indian sporting pantheon will have to respond to the 90m-mark question given that most of his challengers have breached that mark, while Neeraj’s personal best is 89.94m.
