Pakistan cricket pins hope on new domestic structure, Waqar Younis-led six-member advisory board

New Delhi: Pakistan launched a new domestic cricket structure with the aim of being world beaters again.

Led by chairman Mohsin Naqvi, Pakistan Cricket Board introduced a host of changes that will be vetted in its constitution too.

He also disclosed that a six-member advisory board, led by former captain Waqar Younis would be formed soon to oversee all cricketing operations.

“I am bringing in former stars to vet and improve the cricket system and end this culture of personal likes and dislikes,” Naqvi said, as quoted by PTI.

A total of 261 matches, including 131 first class games, 40 50-over matches and 90 T20 fixtures, will be played from September to August 2025 across all three formats in the men’s senior level.

The new domestic structure will come into effect from next month and will have five teams with 30 players each. These teams will participate in the Champions tournaments, including first class, 50-over and T20 matches.

“Each team will be supervised by a reputable former stalwart and he will be given three years to manage and get results. Each team will have a support staff of some 10 people including coaches,” business turned politician Naqvi said.

Former stars will be in charge of these five teams and they will also be part of a cricket advisory board headed by Waqar.

Waqar said his primary task would be to improve Pakistan national team’s performance in major tournament and came on board as he liked the new structure planned to improve domestic cricket.

“We will appoint five legends to head the teams and I am already in touch with some of them,” the former pacer said.

“Cricket remains our product and we have to play good cricket to maintain our brand. All rest comes later.”
